Bayer Leverkusen has confirmed that Nigerian striker Victor Boniface will miss the team’s first Bundesliga match of the year against Borussia Dortmund on January 10 due to a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury. Boniface, 24, has been sidelined since mid-November after sustaining the injury during a 1-1 draw with VfL Bochum.

Initially expected to return to training at the start of January, Boniface encountered a minor setback during his rehabilitation process, delaying his anticipated comeback. Despite showing signs of improvement during the Christmas break, he was not included in the squad for Leverkusen’s recent friendly against Rot-Weiss Oberhausen, raising concerns about his fitness.

Boniface had an impressive start to the season, contributing eight goals and one assist in 15 appearances before the injury disrupted his momentum. The club had hoped he would be available for the crucial match against Dortmund; however, with this latest update, his return date remains uncertain. Additionally, he is likely to miss the following game against Mainz on January 14.

While Boniface’s absence is a significant blow for Leverkusen, head coach Xabi Alonso has reliable options available. Czech forward Patrik Schick has been in excellent form and is expected to lead the attack in Boniface’s absence.
