Former Nigerian international and Super Eagles legend, Finidi George, has publicly criticized Spanish football club Sevilla FC for their treatment of compatriot Kelechi Iheanacho. George asserts that the club has shown a lack of respect towards the 28-year-old striker, who has faced challenges adapting since his transfer to the La Liga side.

Iheanacho joined Sevilla in August 2024 on a two-year deal after departing Leicester City as a free agent. Despite his proven track record in the English Premier League, where he netted six goals and provided three assists in 26 appearances during his final season with the Foxes, Iheanacho has struggled to find his footing in Spain. To date, he has made 11 appearances for Sevilla, scoring three goals, primarily in Copa del Rey matches.

In a recent interview, Finidi George expressed his disappointment with Sevilla’s handling of Iheanacho, stating, “I think they have disrespected him in many ways. They expected a lot from him when he arrived, but it is still early days, and he has not been given enough time to settle in.”

George, who enjoyed a successful playing career with clubs like Real Betis and Ajax, emphasized the importance of patience and support when integrating players into new environments. He believes that Iheanacho has not been afforded the necessary time to adapt to the demands of La Liga and the unique dynamics of Spanish football.

Highlighting Iheanacho’s limited opportunities in league play, George remarked, “Look, every time he’s had enough playing time, he’s been effective. I don’t understand why he never has the confidence he needs in La Liga. I think he’s been scorned enough and he should leave.”

Given the current circumstances, George suggests that Iheanacho consider a move away from Sevilla during the upcoming transfer window. “In my opinion, he should leave the club if any good offers come along. He is 28 and still has a lot to offer, but he needs somewhere where he will be truly appreciated. A return to England would be a great option, but he could also explore other opportunities in new environments.”

Sevilla’s head coach, Xavi García Pimienta, has acknowledged the situation, stating, “I don’t know if Kelechi will stay until the end of the season. Offers have come in for him. He’s well-established in England and surely wants more playing time. I understand he wants to leave, but if I consider he needs to play, he will play. For some reason, Iheanacho hasn’t performed here at the level we all expect, including himself.”

As the January transfer window approaches, speculation regarding Iheanacho’s future continues to mount. Reports suggest interest from clubs in England and other European leagues, with teams seeking to capitalize on the striker’s proven goal-scoring abilities and experience at the highest levels of competition.
