San Diego Wave FC is thrilled to announce the signing of 19-year-old Nigerian forward Chiamaka Okwuchukwu. Acquired from Nigeria’s Rivers Angels FC for an undisclosed fee, Okwuchukwu has inked a one-year contract extending through the 2025 season.
Okwuchukwu’s addition is pending the completion of a medical examination and the receipt of her International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P1 Visa. She will occupy an international slot on the Wave’s 2025 roster.
“We are very pleased to welcome Chiamaka to the Wave family,” said San Diego Wave FC Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton. “Her signing is the latest example of our intention to add promising young players to the roster. With her skillset, we believe Chiamaka will complement our current attacking players very well and be a key contributor to the team.”
Okwuchukwu has garnered international attention for her performances with Nigeria’s U-20 Women’s National Team. At the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, she featured in all four matches, contributing two goals and an assist. Her efforts were instrumental in Nigeria’s progression to the knockout stages.
Her international debut came at just 16 during the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, where she helped Nigeria advance to the quarterfinals.
In recognition of her talent, Okwuchukwu was shortlisted for the 2024 CAF Women’s Young Player of the Year award, underscoring her status as one of Africa’s most promising young footballers.
