Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed his frustration after his team’s 2-2 draw against Brentford on Tuesday night, specifically targeting goalkeeper Stefan Ortega for a lapse in the game’s final moments.
City appeared to be on course for victory with a 2-0 lead, courtesy of two goals from Phil Foden. However, Brentford mounted a late comeback, with Yoane Wissa scoring in the 82nd minute and Christian Norgaard netting the equalizer in stoppage time.
At the final whistle, Guardiola was seen in an animated exchange with Ortega, both embracing and reprimanding the goalkeeper. When questioned about the incident, Guardiola stated, “I was satisfied; we’re talking one action. The same with Ortega, I said how good he played in the actions with the ball, had good passes to Erling [Haaland], how happy and satisfied I am, especially with these two players with what they have done.”
This public display of dissatisfaction underscores the high standards Guardiola maintains for his squad, especially as they strive to close the gap in the Premier League standings. The draw leaves Manchester City in sixth place, 12 points behind leaders Liverpool.
Guardiola acknowledged the team’s fatigue in the latter stages of the match, stating, “The fatigue against Brentford in the last 15 minutes is normal. I don’t have anything to regret. Recover and go to the next game.”
