French midfielder Paul Pogba has revealed his intention to persuade former teammate Antoine Griezmann to come out of international retirement and rejoin the French national team. Pogba, who is set to return to professional football in March 2025 following a reduced doping suspension, shared his aspirations during a recent interview.
In a conversation with streamer AmineMaTue, Pogba expressed his longing for the national team and his plans to reach out to Griezmann upon his return. He stated, “I also miss the French team. I miss playing. If I come back (in blue), I tell him: ‘come back’. If I come back for selection, I’ll give him a call. Direct.”
Antoine Griezmann, 33, announced his retirement from international football in September 2024 after earning 137 caps and scoring 44 goals for France. His decision marked the end of a remarkable era, highlighted by pivotal roles in France’s 2018 FIFA World Cup victory and the 2021 UEFA Nations League triumph. In his farewell message, Griezmann expressed gratitude for his journey with the national team, stating, “It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life. Thank you for this magnificent tricolour adventure, and see you soon.”
Paul Pogba, 31, has faced challenges in recent years, including a provisional suspension in September 2023 after testing positive for testosterone. Initially handed a four-year ban, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced his suspension to 18 months in October 2024, allowing him to resume competition in March 2025. Throughout this period, Pogba has consistently maintained his innocence and remained focused on returning to the sport.
The potential return of both Pogba and Griezmann to the French national team would be significant, given their instrumental roles in past successes. Griezmann’s retirement left a notable void, as highlighted by manager Didier Deschamps, who praised Griezmann’s contributions and their strong relationship, emphasizing his significant impact on French football history.
