In the latest round of transfer news, Newcastle United has reportedly set its sights on the transfer of Nigerian striker Victor Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen next summer. This follows after the potential move of Boniface to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr was dashed earlier this year.
Victor Boniface, 24, has been Bayer Leverkusen’s talisman since joining from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in July 2024 for £17.2 million (€20 million). He netted 14 in 23 during the 2023-24 Bundesliga season and helped Leverkusen to the title. This term, he has maintained his good form with seven goals in 12 games.
Despite being successful on the field, Boniface was recently reported to be due for a high-paying transfer to Al-Nassr. Bayer Leverkusen and the Saudi Arabian club had agreed on a €60 million (£50 million) transfer deal, with Boniface poised to receive around €15 million net per annum, it was reported. The transfer did not materialize, though, and Boniface remained at the German champions. Following the failed transfer, he demonstrated his professionalism by making impressive performances, exhibiting his dedication to Leverkusen.
In the light of this, Newcastle United is among clubs reported to be interested in securing the services of the Nigerian forward. The agents of Boniface are reportedly keen on getting him into the Premier League, and among the likely contenders is Newcastle. The Magpies are reported to be positioned to be granted the chance to sign the attacker, who does not mind moving to the Toon Army.
Newcastle’s quest for improving their offensive threat is also in line with anticipated change within their frontline. With experience frontman Callum Wilson to depart, Boniface would be an effective foil or replacement for Alexander Isak. His highly-publicized goal-scoring prowess and versatility to feature in various roles make him an addition to the Premier League club.
But Newcastle will have to fight for Boniface’s signature. Chelsea FC have also expressed interest, with up to €70 million reportedly in the bid to sign the striker. This alleged bidding war indicates Boniface’s growing profile in European football.
Bayer Leverkusen, though, are keen to keep their finest forward. Their management has, in public declarations, expressed the desire of their forward to stay on with the club, appreciating their integration in the side as well as how important he is to their ongoing campaigns. They have, however, not entirely closed doors on a switch over the summer should a behemoth offer arise.
With the summer window approaching, Newcastle United’s pursuit of Victor Boniface will be something to keep an eye on. The club’s eagerness to add depth to its squad combined with Boniface’s proven track record may make the transfer a good one for everyone concerned. Fans and pundits will be watching closely as the talks potentially gain momentum.
