Netflix has officially secured exclusive U.S. broadcasting rights for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031, marking a historic partnership with FIFA. This agreement, announced on December 20, 2024, is the first time Netflix has acquired full rights to a major sports event, showcasing its commitment to expanding into live sports.
The 2027 tournament will take place in Brazil from June 24 to July 25, featuring 32 teams competing in 64 matches. The host for the 2031 World Cup is yet to be determined, with the U.S. among potential bidders. Netflix plans to deliver comprehensive coverage, including live match streaming and dual-language broadcasts for both English and Spanish audiences.
Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, emphasized that this venture is not just about airing matches but also about celebrating the athletes and the cultural impact of women’s sports. The streaming service will produce exclusive documentary series leading up to the tournaments, highlighting players’ journeys and the global rise of women’s football.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino hailed this partnership as a landmark moment for sports media rights, reinforcing the value of women’s football on a global scale. With this deal, Netflix aims to engage millions of fans and elevate the profile of women’s soccer in the U.S., aligning with its broader strategy of enhancing its sports broadcasting portfolio.
