Liverpool secured their spot in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium. The win marked the Reds’ third semi-final appearance in four seasons.
Darwin Nunez opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 22nd minute, slotting past Alex McCarthy after being played through on goal by a clever pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The Reds doubled their advantage just eight minutes later, as Cody Gakpo slipped Harvey Elliott through on goal, allowing the youngster to apply a simple finish.
Southampton, who were led by interim head coach Simon Rusk following the sacking of Russell Martin, pulled a goal back through Cameron Archer’s stunning strike just before the hour mark.
The Saints pushed hard for an equaliser, with Archer coming close again and Paul Onuachu causing problems for the Liverpool defence after coming off the bench.
However, Liverpool held on to claim the win, which sets up a semi-final clash against one of Arsenal, Newcastle, or the winners of the tie between Tottenham and Manchester United. The draw for the semi-finals will take place on Thursday night.
