Real Madrid secured a thrilling and chaotic 5-2 victory over Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey round of 16 late on Thursday night, with Brazilian teenager Endrick scoring twice in extra time to seal the win. The match had seemed destined for a routine Real Madrid victory, with Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior scoring a goal in each half to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Mbappé’s goal came in the first half, and Vinícius Júnior doubled the lead in the second half, putting Real Madrid in a strong position. However, Celta Vigo staged a dramatic comeback in the final 10 minutes of regular time. Jonathan Bamba scored in the 83rd minute, capitalizing on an Eduardo Camavinga error. Pablo Duran had initially profited from Camavinga’s mistake, squaring the ball for Bamba to strike and make things interesting.
Celta Vigo then forced extra time through a stoppage-time penalty given away by Raul Asencio for a mistimed tackle on Bamba. Marcos Alonso beat Andriy Lunin from the spot to set up another half-hour.
But it was in that period that Madrid began to pull away. Endrick, 18, proved to be the hero, coming off the bench to score a sharp, swiveling shot from the edge of the box in the 108th minute, giving Real Madrid the lead once more.
Federico Valverde extended the lead with a thunderous long-range strike four minutes later, hammering the ball into the top corner. Endrick then sealed the win with a brilliant backheel flick in the 119th minute, wrapping up a thrilling victory for Real Madrid.
The win marked Real Madrid’s eighth victory in their last 10 matches across all competitions. They also extended their winning streak at the Bernabéu to five matches, ahead of their upcoming league clash against Las Palmas on Sunday. This match was also Real Madrid’s second consecutive 5-2 result, although this time they were on the right side of the output following their loss to Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana last weekend.
