Real Madrid secured a thrilling 4-2 victory over Sevilla at the Bernabeu on Sunday afternoon, to leapfrog Barcelona into second place in LaLiga and closing the gap on leaders Atletico Madrid to just one point.
Kylian Mbappe was the star of the show, scoring the opener and providing an assist in a dominant display. The French forward’s goal, which came from outside the box, gave Real Madrid an early lead.
Federico Valverde then doubled the advantage with another impressive strike from distance, before Rodrygo made it 3-0 within 34 minutes.
Sevilla pulled a goal back before halftime through Isaac Romero’s header, which came from a cross by Juanlu Sanchez.
However, Brahim Diaz restored Real Madrid’s three-goal advantage early in the second half, courtesy of Mbappe’s excellent work.
Although Dodi Lukebakio scored a late consolation goal for Sevilla, Real Madrid’s victory means a strong end to 2024. The European and Spanish champions have now won two trophies this season, the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup, and are well-positioned to challenge for more silverware in the new year.
With Vinicius Junior absent due to suspension, Mbappe and Rodrygo stepped up to deliver outstanding performances. Real Madrid’s squad depth and quality will make them a formidable force in the second half of the season, as they bid to overhaul Atletico Madrid and reclaim the LaLiga title.
Real Madrid’s coach, Carlo Ancelotti, has much to ponder as he looks to get the best out of his forward players on a game-to-game basis.
However, it has been a successful end to the year for the European and Spanish champions, who will look to carry this momentum into the new year.
