Justin Kluivert’s hat-trick helped Bournemouth to a stunning 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park in the early kickoff on Saturday, halting the Magpies’ nine-game winning streak. The Cherries’ impressive display lifted them into contention for a European spot, temporarily leapfrogging Manchester City in the Premier League table.
Kluivert’s first-half double, which included a well-placed finish from Antoine Semenyeo’s low cross in the seventh minute and a side-footed effort after being set up by Dango Ouattara just before halftime, put Bournemouth in control. Bruno Guimaraes’ header had briefly leveled the score, flying through a crowd of players and squirming beyond Kepa Arrizabalaga, but Kluivert’s second goal restored the Cherries’ lead.
Newcastle’s persistent attempts to play out from the back repeatedly caused problems for themselves, with Dan Burn and Lewis Hall enduring torrid afternoons with the ball at their feet. Hall probably had his worst game of the season and was tormented by the excellent David Brooks.
The visitors were sharper and quicker, capitalizing on Newcastle’s mistakes. The Magpies’ front three of Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak, and Jacob Murphy were largely anonymous, failing to mount a meaningful response to Bournemouth’s attacking prowess.
Kluivert sealed his hat-trick with a stunning long-range effort in the second half, before Milos Kerkez added a fourth goal to cap off a dominant display by Andoni Iraola’s side. Bournemouth’s victory marked a statement win, moving them within one point of Newcastle United in the Premier League standings as they continue to push for a European spot under Iraola’s guidance.
Only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (11) has scored more Premier League goals away from home this season than Justin Kluivert(9).
