Manchester United secured a late dramatic 2-1 victory over Manchester City in a highly anticipated derby match Sunday evening.
The win marked somewhat a relief for new manager Ruben Amorim, whose United side had struggled to find form in recent weeks.
City took the lead in the 36th minute through Josko Gvardiol’s header, exposing United’s vulnerabilities in defending set pieces.
The first half was characterized by a lack of quality and anxiety from both teams, with just few clear-cut scoring opportunities.
In the second half, United began to gain momentum in a similarly lacklustre second period, creating several scoring chances but could not conjure up a response.
Amad Diallo won a penalty in the 86th minute, which Bruno Fernandes converted to level the score. Diallo then sealed the victory for United in the dying moments of the game, scoring a well-taken goal that sent the visiting fans into ecstasy and to secure a 2-1 win.
Manchester City have now lost a home game after leading at half time for the first time since 8th May 2021, which came against Chelsea. Since then, City went 44 games without defeat in the Premier League after leading at half-time, while Ruben Amorim becomes the first Manchester United manager to win their first Manchester Derby since Alex Ferguson in the 1992/93 season.
The result marked a significant setback for City, who slipped to fifth in the league standings, nine points adrift of leaders Liverpool. United, meanwhile, rose to 12th place, securing their second league win under new manager Ruben Amorim.
Next up, United will visit Tottenham in the League Cup quarter-finals on Thursday, followed by a league match against Bournemouth on Sunday. City, meanwhile, will travel to Aston Villa on Saturday.
