Manchester City ended their five-match winless streak with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium. The win marked City’s first away victory in nine matches and propelled them to fifth place in the Premier League.
City started confidently, with a verve and zip to their passing in the opening minutes. Erling Haaland came close to scoring in the seventh minute, but his low shot was saved by Jakub Stolarczyk.
Leicester threatened on several occasions, with Jamie Vardy bursting clear in the 10th minute, only to be denied by a raised assistant referee’s flag. Josko Gvardiol’s headed back pass was then intercepted by Vardy, who saw his angled shot saved by Stefan Ortega.
City hit back with a beautifully crafted move, which resulted in the opening goal. A rapid interchange of passes between Kevin De Bruyne, Rico Lewis, and Phil Foden ended with Foden firing a low shot from 25 yards out. Stolarczyk saved it, but could only push the ball to the left, where Savinho reacted quickest to plant a shot high into the top right corner for his first goal for the club.
The match continued to ebb and flow, with both teams creating chances. Facundo Buonanotte came close to leveling the scores for Leicester, but his shot struck the post.
After the break, the match remained end-to-end, with chances at either end. Manuel Akanji cleared off the line in the 62nd minute, and Vardy could have leveled for Leicester in the 68th minute, but his decision to try and guide a volley home rather than head the ball resulted in a looping effort that went over.
City punished Leicester for that miss in devastating fashion. Substitute James McAtee produced a delightful piece of skill on the right flank to start a counter-attack, which saw De Bruyne find Savinho. The Brazilian’s cross was powerfully headed home by Haaland to seal the win.
The victory marked a welcome return to form for City, who had struggled in recent matches. The team’s performance was characterized by their resilience and determination, with Savinho’s display particularly impressive.
