Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri stole the show once again with yet another stunning performance and a wonderful goal, that saw Arsenal to a 2-1 win over Girona and sending the Gunners directly to the Champions League last 16.

Mikel Arteta’s words echoed in the minds of everyone at Montilivi: “We’ve got some player there.” And indeed, the 17-year-old Nwaneri proved himself to be a gem, capping off his first start in the competition with a memorable display. Nwaneri, already one of the youngest player in Premier League history, showed a speed and gracefulness to his movement, self-assuredness in everything he did.

The match itself was a comfortable enough win for Arsenal, but what made it special was Nwaneri’s goal, which gave them the lead. The youngster’s strike came after Jorginho had equalized for Arsenal from the penalty spot, canceling out Arnaut Danjuma’s opener for Girona. Danjuma’s goal had come after a lovely ball from Juanpe Ramírez, and Neto’s rush out of his goal had left him isolated.

Arsenal dominated the match, with Nwaneri and Raheem Sterling constantly on the move. Sterling had flashed one past the post and clipped in a neat delivery for Leandro Trossard, who couldn’t react in time to guide the ball goalwards. Riccardo Calafiori also made some impressive runs down the flank, disappearing and reappearing undetected at opportune moments.

Girona, however, had their moments, and Neto’s errors almost gifted them the opening goal. But it was Danjuma who eventually put the hosts ahead, side-footing the ball past the isolated Neto. Danjuma also showed some great skill, leaving Thomas Partey behind him with a flick of the ankle.

The second half saw Girona introduce Cristhian Stuani, who was greeted with an ovation. Stuani, 38 and the most significant player in Girona’s history, had made his professional debut before Nwaneri was born. However, his goal was ruled out for offside, and Arsenal held on for the win.

In the end, it was a night to remember for Nwaneri, who had given everything and taken it all in. As he walked off the pitch, he was met with applause from the Arsenal supporters and staff, thanks to his impressive performance. Girona, despite their elimination, had won respect with their performances in the competition. Their historic debut campaign may have been painful, but it was also a valuable learning experience.

The night ended with a moment of celebration for Girona, as Pau López saved Sterling’s penalty, giving the hosts a small victory to cherish. For Nwaneri, however, the night was all about his unforgettable performance and his wonderful goal.
