Arsenal closed the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool to four points with a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Tottenham in the north London derby on Wednesday night. The win was sparked by two goals in four first-half minutes, as the Gunners recovered from a shock deficit to claim all three points.
The victory being a significant boost to Arsenal’s title chances, particularly after Liverpool dropped points with a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. However, the Gunners faced an early setback when Heung-Min Son’s deflected strike gave Tottenham the lead at the Emirates Stadium.
Despite dominating possession, Arsenal struggled to create clear-cut chances until the 40th minute, when they scored from a disputed corner. The ball appeared to touch Leandro Trossard before going behind, but the goal was awarded, and Dominic Solanke’s chested effort from Gabriel’s header gave the Gunners a lifeline.
Four minutes later, Martin Odegaard’s precise pass released Trossard down the left, and his driven shot squirmed through Antonin Kinsky’s hands to give Arsenal the lead. The hosts then adopted a more defensive approach in the second half, but still managed to create several scoring opportunities.
Kai Havertz, who had been criticized for missing crucial chances in recent games, squandered two glorious opportunities, firing over from close range and heading straight at Kinsky. Martin Odegaard also missed a chance to seal the win late on, but Arsenal’s victory was never seriously threatened.
Tottenham, who introduced Richarlison from the bench in his return from injury, barely troubled the Arsenal goal, with Pedro Porro’s stoppage-time shot off the post from an acute angle their closest effort to a second-half response.
The win propels Arsenal into a strong position in the title race, while Tottenham remains in 13th place with just one league win since November.
