Manchester United is delighted to reveal on February 2, 2025 the purchase of 20-year-old Danish international Patrick Dorgu from Italian club Lecce. The flexible left-back has agreed to a five-and-a-half-year deal running till June 2030, including a possibility for another year. Valued at €30 million, the transfer arrangement is worth an extra €35 million in possible add-ons.
Born on October 26,2004 in Copenhagen, Denmark, Patrick Dorgu has quickly climbed the European football ladder. At 1.87 meters he has on-field versatility and is skilled in left back, wing back, and winger. Starting in Husum Boldklub, Dorgu moved to Nordsjælland before joining Lecce’s youth roster in 2022. Promoted to the senior squad of Lecce for the 2023-24 season, he debuted in a Coppa Italia match against Como on August 13, 2023 and followed this by his Serie A debut against Lazio one week later. Dorgu scored five times and played in 57 games for Lecce over two seasons.
Dorgu has represented Denmark at all young levels on the world scene and made his senior team debut against Switzerland on September 5, 2024. He surprisingly netted his first foreign goal only 42 seconds after coming onto the field, helping Denmark to a 2–0 result. He has scored once for his national team and four senior caps hitherto.
Dorgu said he was excited upon signing: “Joining Manchester United is a dream come true. Under Manager Ruben Amorim’s direction, I am excited to grow and help the team succeed.”
Manager Ruben Amorim, who began managing Old Trafford in November 2024, saw the need of reinforcements mostly in the left-back position. Dorgu’s signing deals with this need, especially given injuries to Luke Shaw and difficulties in the back line of the team. Amorim remarked, “Patrick’s versatility and skill set harmonize ideally with our strategic goals. His inclusion fortifies our squad since we seek to move up the table of the Premier League.”
Also lauding the recent signing was Technical Director Jason Wilcox: “Patrick is a player we’ve been tracking closely. His worth comes from his offensive contributions as well as his defensive awareness. He is important in our prospective victories, we believe.”
After the purchase of 18-year-old Ayden Heaven from Arsenal, Dorgu turns into Amorim’s second acquisition. The club feels that these tactical acquisitions will improve current Premier League 12th-ranked Manchester United overall performance.
