Manchester City is delighted to announce the signing of highly-rated Uzbekistan international defender, Abdukodir Khusanov, from Ligue 1 side RC Lens. The 20-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Premier League champions, extending until the summer of 2029, with an option for an additional year. The deal is reportedly worth €40 million, with up to €10 million in potential add-ons.

Khusanov’s transfer is groundbreaking, as he becomes the first Uzbek player to feature in the Premier League. His rapid rise to prominence has been remarkable; just 18 months ago, he was playing in Belarus for Energetik-BGU Minsk before joining Lens in July 2023. Since then, he has established himself as one of Ligue 1’s most promising talents, making 31 appearances for Lens and earning 18 caps for Uzbekistan’s national team.

The young defender expressed his excitement about joining Manchester City:

“I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester City, a club I have admired for a long time. This squad is full of the best players in the world, and I can’t wait to learn from Pep Guardiola and contribute to the team’s success. This is a proud moment for me and my family, and I’m ready for this challenge.”

Khusanov will wear the No. 45 shirt at City and is expected to provide much-needed defensive reinforcements following injuries to key players like Ruben Dias and John Stones. Known for his athleticism, speed, and technical ability, Khusanov’s versatility will bolster City’s backline as they aim to recover from a challenging first half of the season.

City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, praised Khusanov’s potential:

“Abdukodir is an intelligent and aggressive defender with exceptional pace. Working under Pep Guardiola will only enhance his development, and we’re confident he will thrive in our system.”

Khusanov’s signing marks City’s first acquisition of the January transfer window as part of their broader squad rebuilding efforts. The club has already secured Palmeiras’ Vitor Reis and is pursuing additional targets before the window closes.

Having impressed with his performances at Lens—where he stepped up admirably during a teammate’s health-related absence—Khusanov has shown resilience and adaptability. His ability to play in both back-three and back-four systems makes him an ideal fit for Guardiola’s tactical flexibility.

This move also highlights Manchester City’s commitment to scouting emerging global talent. By investing in Khusanov, they not only strengthen their defensive options but also open a new chapter in Premier League history by introducing Uzbekistan’s first representative in England’s top flight.

As Manchester City prepares for the second half of the season, Khusanov’s arrival signals their determination to compete at the highest level across all competitions. Fans eagerly await his debut as he embarks on this exciting new journey at one of football’s most prestigious clubs.
