In a groundbreaking move for English football, the English Football League (EFL) has announced that referees will make in-stadium announcements regarding Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions during the upcoming Carabao Cup semi-finals and final. This initiative marks the first time such announcements will be made in England, aimed at enhancing transparency and communication with fans.
The EFL confirmed that VAR will be utilized in both legs of the semi-finals, featuring Arsenal vs. Newcastle and Tottenham vs. Liverpool, as well as the final scheduled for March 16, 2025. Referees will announce the outcomes of VAR reviews directly to spectators in the stadium, including decisions made after consultations at pitchside monitors and factual matters such as accidental handballs or offside judgments.
This pilot program is part of a broader commitment by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to embrace technological advancements that benefit match officials and fans alike. The decision follows successful trials of similar practices at international events, including the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
EFL officials believe that this new approach will foster a better understanding among supporters regarding crucial decisions made during matches. Referees have been undergoing training to prepare for these announcements, ensuring clarity and consistency during the semi-finals.
The first leg of the semi-finals will take place on January 7 and 8, 2025, with the second legs scheduled for February 5 and 6. As excitement builds around these high-stakes matches, fans can look forward to a more engaging matchday experience with real-time insights into VAR decisions.
