Leon Balogun, the seasoned defender currently plying his trade with Rangers FC, has officially announced his availability for selection to the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles. Despite a hiatus from international duty since June 2022, Balogun emphasizes that he has not retired from representing Nigeria and remains eager to contribute to the team’s future endeavors.

Balogun’s last appearance for Nigeria was during the 10-0 victory over São Tomé and Príncipe in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, where he featured as a substitute. Since then, his absence from the national squad has been attributed to injury setbacks rather than a lack of commitment. In a recent interview, Balogun clarified the situation, stating,

“It’s not that I’ve turned down any invitations. Unfortunately, I picked up an injury before the World Cup break, which was meant to be short-term, but it didn’t heal as expected. After I recovered, I had a relapse. Since then, I’ve had no serious injury issues, and I’m still eager and motivated to represent the national team.”

At 36, Balogun has demonstrated remarkable resilience and form at the club level. Since rejoining Rangers FC in July 2023, he has become an integral part of the squad, making 18 appearances this season and contributing both defensively and offensively with a goal and an assist. His consistent performances have not gone unnoticed, leading to discussions about a potential recall to the Super Eagles.

Nigeria’s interim technical director, Augustine Eguavoen, has acknowledged the possibility of Balogun’s return to the national team, stating, *”It is possible, you can’t rule it out.” Additionally, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed his support for Balogun’s return, praising his professionalism and contributions to both club and country.

Balogun himself remains optimistic about rejoining the national squad, asserting,

“I have always been available. I’ve never said that I retired from international football, and I think the people who need to know are aware that I’m still very much willing and ambitious to represent the national team.”

As Nigeria prepares for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Balogun’s experience and leadership could prove invaluable. His potential inclusion would bolster the defensive options available to the coaching staff, providing both skill and mentorship to younger players.
