Much wouldn’t have been expected from the home side Leicester City, as their dismal run continued on Friday night after suffering a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Brentford. The loss — their sixth consecutive home defeat, a new Premier League record for the Foxes, has left them staring at the irrevocable possibility of relegation.
The writing was on the wall as early as the 14th minute when the home fans began chanting “We want Rudkin out,” targeting the club’s director of football, Jon Rudkin. The team’s defensive frailties were exposed once again as Brentford scored three goals in a devastating 15-minute first half spell.
Yoane Wissa opened the scoring with a well-timed run and finish, from a Mikkel Damsgaard’s clever pass. Wissa’s run in from Victor Kristiansen and off the back of Caleb Okoli was timed exquisitely to get on the end of Damsgaard’s cunningly dinked pass, allowing him to shoot down off the turf and into the net.
Bryan Mbeumo doubled the lead with a curling effort, showing Kristiansen exactly where he wanted to go before cutting inside on to his favoured left foot and curling home into the gaping half net. Christian Nørgaard then headed home unopposed at the near post to make it 3-0, with Leicester’s defenders nowhere to be seen, just as it’s been the case all season.
The second half offered little or no respite for Leicester, with Brentford dominating possession and creating scoring opportunities at will. Jamie Vardy had a couple of sharp efforts as Leicester looked decent on the counterattack, with Bilal El Khannouss displaying his elite quality. However, Brentford’s defense held firm, and the Bees continued to push for more goals.
Fabio Carvalho sealed the win with a late goal, prompting the remaining Leicester fans to chant “Sack the board.” The defeat is Leicester’s 10th loss in their last 11 league games, and the pressure is mounting on manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
Brentford’s victory extended their impressive away record, with four consecutive wins on the road. The Bees now sit just six points off the European places, while Leicester’s woes continue to deepen, as they’re well in the race for survival.
The Foxes’ manager, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, faces increasing pressure as his team’s struggles show no signs of abating. The Dutchman’s decision to introduce Facundo Buonanotte from the bench was met with a mixed reaction from the fans, who are growing increasingly frustrated with the team’s performances.
As the season wears on, Leicester’s chances of survival look increasingly slim. With just 13 games remaining, the Foxes sure needs a good run of form and some help here and there to turn their fortunes around as they seek to avoid a return to the Championship.
