Morocco has retained its position as the top-ranked African nation in FIFA’s latest rankings, released in January 2025. This update highlights the evolving landscape of African football, showcasing the successes and challenges faced by various national teams.

Morocco Leads the Pack

Morocco remains the highest-ranked African team, currently positioned 14th globally. Despite a slight drop from 13th to 14th due to Uruguay’s rise, the Atlas Lions have demonstrated remarkable form in recent matches. Their impressive performances during the CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers included significant victories over Gabon (5-1) and Lesotho (7-0), contributing to their strong standing in African football.

Senegal Solidifies Its Position

Following Morocco, Senegal ranks second in Africa and 17th globally. The Lions of Teranga have moved up three places thanks to key victories against Burkina Faso (1-0) and Burundi (2-0). These results reflect Senegal’s continued growth as a powerhouse in African football, with emerging talents like Habib Diarra making significant contributions to the team’s success.

Egypt and Algeria Compete for Dominance

Egypt holds the third position in Africa, ranking 33rd globally. The Pharaohs have made strides in their performances, gaining valuable points that reflect their competitive edge.

Algeria follows closely in fourth place, ranking 37th globally. The Fennecs have capitalized on Nigeria’s struggles, maintaining their position despite a slight points reduction after a goalless draw with Equatorial Guinea.

Nigeria Faces Challenges

Nigeria’s recent performances have led to a decline in their FIFA ranking, now sitting at 44th globally and fifth in Africa. The Super Eagles endured a challenging international break, drawing against Benin and suffering a defeat to Rwanda. This resulted in a significant loss of points, emphasizing the need for strategic improvements as they aim to reclaim their status among Africa’s elite.

Notable Climbers: Niger and Comoros

Niger emerged as a standout performer in this ranking period, climbing nine places to 122nd globally and 34th in Africa after impressive victories against Sudan (4-0) and Ghana (2-1). This marks a significant leap for Niger, showcasing their potential on the international stage.

Comoros also continued its ascent, moving up five places to 103rd globally and 23rd in Africa. Their qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations highlights their growing stature within African football.
