The latest football news making the rounds, Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has been suspended for two games by the RFEF for his red card in the 1-1 LaLiga draw against Osasuna on Saturday. The disciplinary committee stated it was due to “attitudes of contempt or lack of consideration towards referees”.

It happened in the 39th minute when referee José Luis Munuera Montero sanctioned Bellingham with a direct red card to the bench for supposedly calling him with insulting words. According to the report of the referee, he mouthed the term “f*** you.”

Bellingham and Real Madrid disputed the referee’s version, claiming that the midfielder uttered “f*** off,” a term which they claim is widely used in English football as a sign of frustration and not an insult. Manager Carlo Ancelotti came to the defense of the interpretation, stating, “I think the referee did not understand Jude Bellingham’s English. He said f*** off, not f*** you. that’s so different.”

Regardless of these allegations, the RFEF disciplinary panel sustained the recommendation of the referee and handed down the two-match suspension. Real Madrid has announced their plans to appeal against the ruling so that Bellingham will be ready for the following LaLiga matches against Girona and Real Betis.

This incident has sparked a wider debate over how language is understood and how culture is interpreted in football. Some analysts argue that words most commonly used in English may be misinterpreted outside of an English-speaking environment, leading to sanctions which might not be what the player means.

After the red card, referee José Luis Munuera Montero has also come under attack, with himself and his family facing threats and abuse. In an emotional interview on Spanish radio, Munuera wept openly in front of the microphone, saying, “They are maligning my nephews, they are assaulting my nine brothers, my 80-year-old father went to mass today and. I’d better shut up.”

It has also increased the debates with even greater intensity in respect of how referees should be treated and demanding greater protection against abuse. RFEF released a statement to condemn abuse which Munuera has been experiencing since the episode and offer their support for him.

Real Madrid have immediately appealed the two match ban on Jude Bellingham. The appeal rumbles on, and Real Madrid, like Jude Bellingham, will be desperately waiting for the verdict that might profoundly influence his availability for key coming games. The club will remain hopeful that the suspension gets rescinded so that Bellingham could keep adding to their LaLiga campaign.
