The final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park couldn’t have been more dramatic and chaotic than we saw late on Wednesday night, In a thrilling finale to the reschedule matchup at Goodison Park, Everton captain James Tarkowski scored a stunning equalizer in the 98th minute to secure a 2-2 draw against Liverpool, after it looked as though all three points were secured already by the Reds.

The match was a significant one for the Everton faithfuls, being the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, with the two teams having played each other 131 times, resulting in 41 wins apiece and 38 draws.

Everton took the lead in the 11th minute through Beto’s goal, who ran onto a cleverly slipped free kick by Jarrad Branthwaite into the left side of the box and slotted the ball under the arm of goalkeeper Alisson Becker. The stadium erupted in jubilation as the Everton fans celebrated an unlikely opening goal.

However, Liverpool equalized just five minutes later with Alexis Mac Allister’s perfectly timed header, which met Mohamed Salah’s cross and finished with a glancing header to the bottom corner. The goal was just Liverpool’s perfect response to going behind earlier on, and a well timed one it was.

Both teams had several chances in the chaotic match and Salah struck again in the 73rd minute against the run of play to give Liverpool the lead. Everton struggled to clear, and Branthwaite headed Curtis Jones’ shot into the path of Salah, who slammed the ball in. The goal seemed to have sealed the win for Liverpool, but Everton refused to give up in their dire need for something to cheer their fans.

Despite being behind, Everton pushed hard for an equalizer, and their determination paid off when Tarkowski scored a dramatic equalizer in the 98th minute. The goal was initially met with a lengthy VAR review, but it was eventually confirmed, sending the stadium into a wild frenzy.

With the draw, Liverpool remain seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table, while Everton climb to 15th place, 10 points above the relegation zone.

We couldn’t have asked for more than this show of intense emotion, with Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones both receiving red cards in the aftermath of the final whistle. Liverpool manager Arne Slot was also sent off for his complaints towards referee Michael Oliver.

Despite the drama, the focus will remain on Tarkowski’s incredible equalizer, which secured a memorable point for Everton, the fans and ensured a fitting finale to the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.
