The FIFA Ethics Committee has imposed a six-month suspension on Manuel Arias, President of the Panamanian Football Federation (FEPAFUT), due to the use of inappropriate language directed at national team player Marta Cox.
The incident traces back to March 2024, following Panama’s elimination from the Concacaf W Gold Cup. In response to Cox’s public concerns regarding the inadequate training facilities for women’s football in Panama, Arias made disparaging comments about her physical condition, stating she was “out of shape” and “fat.”
These remarks prompted Cox to consider withdrawing from the national team, expressing that such language was hurtful and unexpected. The global players’ union, FIFPro, condemned Arias’s comments as “unacceptable.”
In light of the situation, FEPAFUT issued an apology, emphasizing their commitment to advancing women’s football in the country. The federation acknowledged the challenges faced and reiterated the need for continued efforts to improve conditions for female players.
Accepting the FIFA-imposed sanction, Arias expressed deep regret for his remarks, describing them as a “serious error.” He stated his intention to use the suspension period, effective until July 14, 2025, for reflection and personal growth. During his absence, FEPAFUT’s First Vice President, Fernando Arce, will assume leadership responsibilities, ensuring the federation’s operations continue without disruption.
