FC Barcelona is currently embroiled in a legal battle to secure the registration of star midfielder Dani Olmo before the January transfer window opens. The club has presented its case in court, arguing for Olmo’s right to be registered despite facing stringent financial regulations imposed by La Liga.

The hearing is set for December 23, with a ruling expected by December 27. This situation arises from Barcelona’s ongoing financial difficulties, which have hindered their ability to register new players. Olmo was initially registered following an injury to Andreas Christensen, which allowed the club to reallocate 80% of the injured player’s salary. However, with Christensen now fit, Barcelona finds itself in a precarious position.

Failure to register Olmo could lead him to exercise a clause in his contract that allows him to leave the club as a free agent. This potential loss is compounded by the fact that Barcelona may have to sell assets worth €80 million if they cannot secure Olmo’s registration. The club is exploring various avenues to meet La Liga’s salary cap requirements, including potential sponsorship deals and player sales.

Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, remains optimistic about the outcome, stating, “We are confident about being able to register Dani Olmo before the end of the year.” The club is drawing on previous legal successes, such as the registration of Gavi, as they navigate this challenging situation.
