In their most notable act of struggling all season, Manchester United staged a late comeback to secure a 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon, rescuing a point from the tense Premier League encounter that leaves them motionless on 15th position.
Trailing for most of the match, United’s fortunes changed with a moment of magic from captain Bruno Fernandes. His sublime free-kick, struck with precision and power, sparked a nail-biting comeback, giving his team the inspiration they desperately needed.
Following a poor run of form in the Premier League, with three defeats in their last five outings, United were eager to come away with a decent result at Goodison Park. The match got off to a rocky start for United, as Noussair Mazraoui was forced off the field with a knee issue just minutes after kickoff. Fortunately, he was able to return to action soon after, much to the relief of the United bench.
Everton dominated the early stages, with Beto heading a well-struck cross from Jack Harrison goalwards, only for Andre Onana to make a comfortable save. United’s best chance of the first half came when Fernandes threaded a neat ball through to Patrick Dorgu, who embarked on an impressive sprint down the left flank. However, Jordan Pickford intercepted the ball, denying Rasmus Hojlund a scoring opportunity.
Everton took the lead through Beto, who thumped the ball into the back of the net from close range after a chaotic goalmouth scramble. The hosts doubled their lead when Abdoulaye Doucouré headed the ball into the net after Onana had parried a shot from Harrison. The goal was a result of poor goalkeeping from Onana, who should have at least tracked back after the loose ball.
United’s shambolic first-half performance left them with a mountain to climb, but they managed to launch a respectable comeback in the second half. Fernandes’ sublime free-kick gave United a lifeline, and Ashley Young’s handball allowed Alejandro Garnacho to win another dangerous free-kick. While Fernandes’ cross was blocked, Manuel Ugarte pounced on the deflection, hitting a sublime volley to score a breathtaking equalizer.
As the match neared its conclusion, United pushed hard for a winner. Fernandes hit a lethal shot from a long distance that Pickford tipped over the crossbar. In the dying moments of the game, Maguire brought down Young in the box, prompting the referee to award a penalty. However, after a VAR review, the referee overturned his decision, much to United’s relief.
The match having ended 2-2, would see United relieved to have at least secured a point from a very difficult position. Although, manager Ruben Amorim will be dissatisfied with his team’s poor first-half performance, which has become a recurring theme for this shaky United side.
