The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is proud to announce the appointment of Eric Sekou Chelle as the new head coach of the national men’s football team, the Super Eagles. The unveiling ceremony took place today at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, marking a significant moment in Nigerian football.

Chelle, a 47-year-old Franco-Malian coach, takes over the reins as the third coach since the departure of Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro. His appointment comes after careful consideration and recommendations from the NFF’s Technical and Development Committee. Chelle has signed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year, contingent upon successful qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In his new role, Chelle will lead the Super Eagles in their upcoming matches, including the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in East Africa and crucial World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe scheduled for March. His extensive coaching experience, particularly with the Mali national team—where he achieved notable success including a quarter-final appearance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations—positions him well to guide Nigeria back to footballing prominence.

During the unveiling, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau emphasized the federation’s confidence in Chelle’s abilities. “We believe that Eric Chelle embodies the spirit and determination needed to elevate our team,” Gusau stated. “His vision aligns with our goals, and we are committed to supporting him fully as he embarks on this journey.”

While Chelle’s appointment has sparked mixed reactions among fans—some expressing concerns regarding his foreign nationality and coaching credentials—the NFF urges supporters to rally behind him. “This is a new dawn for the Super Eagles,” Gusau added. “We ask all Nigerians to unite in support of our new coach as he brings fresh ideas and energy to our beloved team.”

Chelle expressed his excitement about taking on this significant challenge. “Football is about scoring goals, and I am here to work,” he said. “Nigeria has one of the best teams not only in Africa but in the world. I am grateful for this opportunity and ready to lead the Super Eagles to success.”
