The New York Red Bulls are thrilled to announce the signing of veteran forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to a two-year designated player contract. The deal, which includes an option for the 2027 season, was finalized today, marking a significant addition to the club as they prepare for the upcoming Major League Soccer (MLS) season.
Choupo-Moting, a 35-year-old Cameroon international, arrives at the Red Bulls after a successful stint with Bayern Munich, where he scored 38 goals in 122 appearances. During his time in Germany, he contributed to the club’s impressive trophy haul, including three Bundesliga titles, one DFB-Pokal (German Cup), and one FIFA Club World Cup. His experience in top-tier European football will be invaluable as the Red Bulls aim to enhance their attacking prowess.
Head of Sport Jochen Schneider expressed enthusiasm about Choupo-Moting’s addition to the team: “We are excited to add a player of Maxim’s caliber to our roster. He is a great player and a winner. His experience in Europe’s top leagues will be greatly important to our club in 2025 and beyond.”
Born on March 23, 1989, in Hamburg, Germany, Choupo-Moting began his professional career with Hamburger SV before moving on to play for clubs such as FC Nürnberg, FSV Mainz 05, a brief stint at Stoke City and Schalke 04. He gained international recognition during his tenure at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) from 2018 to 2020, where he won two Ligue 1 titles and one French Cup.
Choupo-Moting has also represented Cameroon on the international stage, scoring 20 goals in 73 appearances. Notably, he participated in three FIFA World Cups (2010, 2014, and 2022) and helped lead the Indomitable Lions to a third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021.
Choupo-Moting joins an attacking lineup that already features Swedish international Emil Forsberg and Dante Vanzeir. His versatility as a forward will provide head coach Sandro Schwarz with additional tactical options as they look to improve upon last season’s performance. The Red Bulls finished seventh in the Eastern Conference with 47 points and qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the fifteenth consecutive year.
“Maxim is a strong forward who will bring a lot of experience and leadership to our club,” said Schwarz. “He will be a great addition to our roster, and we are looking forward to seeing him on the pitch at Sports Illustrated Stadium.”
