Chelsea women player ratings vs Celtic: Wieke Kaptein & Erin Cuthbert dominate as wasteful Blues survive early scare in unexpectedly narrow Champions League win

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor will be baffled that her side only managed to score twice against the Scottish champions at Celtic Park

Chelsea made it three wins from three in the Champions League on Wednesday night but they were immensely wasteful in their 2-1 victory over Celtic.

The WSL champions were good for their victory, but they had to come from behind after Celtic snatched a lead against the run of play. The hosts had barely had a sniff when, in the 22nd minute, Murphy Agnew latched onto Amy Gallacher’s perfect through ball before beating Zecira Musovic with a fine finish.

Celtic’s advantage didn’t last long, though. Six minutes after going behind, Maika Hamano turned home from close range following good work from Aggie Beever-Jones.

And the turnaround was complete in the 32nd minute when Ashley Lawrence finished off a fine team move at the second time of asking.

Chelsea spent the second half camped inside Celtic’s half and managed 26 shots in total, but Beever-Jones, Catarina Macario and Nathalie Bjorn all saw their efforts avoid the net.

Beever-Jones’ red card in second-half injury time for a late challenge saw the game end on a sour note.

The win leaves Bompastor’s side top of Group B with a 100% record through their first three games.

GOAL rates Chelsea’s players from Celtic Park…

Goalkeeper & Defence

Zecira Musovic (6/10):

Will be gutted about not keeping a clean sheet in a game that Chelsea controlled from start to finish.

Eve Perisset (6/10):

Her toughest challenge was staying alert as the Blues pushed for a third.

Maelys Mpome (5/10):

Handed her first start but didn’t look very comfortable during Celtic’s rare forays forward.

Nathalie Bjorn (7/10):

Didn’t have many defensive responsibilities but did her job well. Should have scored in the second half.

Midfield

Ashley Lawrence (7/10):

That’s two goals in three games now for Lawrence, who enjoyed having the license to get forward.

Oriane Jean Francois (8/10):

Covered so much grass, won her battles and kept the ball moving. Classy stuff.

Erin Cuthbert (8/10):

Ran the game from central midfield. The only thing missing from the Rangers fan’s performance was a goal.

Wieke Kaptein (8/10):

Always wanted the ball and helped the Blues get into dangerous positions with some very nice touches.

Sandy Baltimore (7/10):

A lively display from the France international, who was instrumental in the second goal and caused havoc on both flanks.

Attack

Maika Hamano (7/10):

Rather quiet but she got herself on the scoresheet to equalise.

Aggie Beever-Jones (6/10):

Produced a fine assist for Hamano and displayed some nice touches, but let herself down with a late sending off.

Subs & Manager

Lucy Bronze (7/10):

Helped to improve Chelsea’s balance after coming on for the second half.

Guro Reiten (6/10):

Her fresh legs helped against a tiring defence.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd (7/10):

Had a lot of fun and showcased her neat footwork.

Catarina Macario (6/10):

Came close to scoring a wonderful goal but saw her effort saved.

Sonia Bompastor (7/10):

Cut a frustrated figure on the sideline as Chelsea pushed for a third, but Bompastor should be content with the win despite leaving a host of stars, including Kadeisha Buchanan, Millie Bright, Sjoeke Nusken and Mayra Ramirez, at home.
