Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal showed again why they deserve to be considered title contenders as they moved within seven points of league leaders, Liverpool. Jurrien Timbers and Willian Saliba both scored from corners to serve Ruben Amorin his first Premier League defeat.

Man United’s approach from kickoff was rather cautious, with the visitors content on retaining possession and starving the hosts of the ball as much as possible. Their spells of position nearly gifted them a first half lead in the 43rd minute when Diogo Dalot blew a beautiful chance by sending a rebound narrowly wide of the left post. Most United fans went into the break reminiscing about the chance, but that didn’t make them unsatisfied with the team’s overall first half Performance.

However, the second half proved to be a different ball game. The Gunner started brightly, attacking with renewed energy and forcing most of Man United’s players into defensive positions. The deadlock was eventually broken in the 54th minute, when Jurrien Timbers’ head connected with Declan Rice’s corner kick to give Arsenal the lead – The Gunner’s 21st goal from corner kicks since last season. Amorin responded almost immediately with a triple change that saw Rashford, Zirkzee and Yoro introduced into the action.

Minutes after, United nearly leveled from their own well-crafted set piece, but David Raya produced a superb save at full stretch to deny Matthijs de Light the opportunity to become United’s hero of the night.

Another goal in the 73rd minute from yet another corner showed Arsenal are not joking with their set piece routines. This time, it was Willian Saliba’s that tucked the ball in from a Thomas Partey near post assist. Arsenal coasted through the final 15 minutes with little threat from the visitors. The loss might be a blow to Amorin’s efforts, but he has an opportunity to rectify the situation this Saturday when his team hosts Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.

Elsewhere, Liverpool drew to Newcastle United reducing their points lead at the top of the table to just 12. Arsenal are third on the log, but are tied on points with Chelsea who are on fine firm and may be aiming to leverage December’s congested run of fixtures.
