Quite an emotional atmosphere it was late on Monday evening when West Ham received visiting Wolves after Michail Antonio’s car accident at the weekend.
Despite the score tied at 0-0, It was an exciting display of end to end attacking football through the first 45 minutes of the game, with both sides coming close to taking the lead.
Just right at the resumption, Ait Nouri gets free on the left and only needs to cross for an unmarked Doherty at the back post, but the Algeria international over lifts his cross and it was a big chance for Wolves wasted.
The deadlock was broken in the 53rd minute when a completely free Tomas Soucek lops in a header from Jarrod Bowen’s corner kick to put the host in front after several missed opportunities. Soucek went on to celebrate by paying tribute to Michail Antonio by holding up 9 fingers and shouting “Antonio” into the camera.
Mohammed Kudus thought he had doubled the hammers’ lead on the 60 minute but his goal got chalked off by the VAR for a marginal offside.
Emerson escaped giving away a penalty after bundling onto the back of Goncalo Guedes, but the VAR decided against it.
Matt Doherty levels for the visitors shortly, sweeping in superbly from a Rayan Ait Nouri’s wonderful cross.
Wolves could only restore parity for two minutes as Mohammed Kudus lays the ball back brilliantly to Jarrod Bowen, who beats a man before placing it into the bottom corner.
West Ham neutralized any goal scoring threat from Wolves to hold on for a much needed victory.
A huge win for Lopetegui and a damning defeat for O’Neil and Wolves who remain 19th on the log with 9 points from 15 games. Meanwhile, West Ham have moved to within a point of Manchester United.
