Aston Villa’s season, recently rated seven out of 10 by manager Unai Emery, received a much-needed boost as they came from behind to defeat Chelsea 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday evening.

The win ended Villa’s winless run of five matches and provided a welcome respite from their struggles in the Premier League. Emery’s side has been prioritizing their European campaign, which has taken a toll on their domestic form.

Chelsea took the lead through Enzo Fernández’s simple finish after Pedro Neto’s excellent cross. Neto flew down the right flank, skinning Villa defender Ian Maatsen, and sent a superb cross into the six-yard box. Moisés Caicedo flipped the ball wide to Neto, and his cross allowed Fernández, pushed forward behind Neto, to score easily.

Villa’s revamped back four, featuring Ezri Konsa’s return from injury, struggled to contain Chelsea’s attacking threats. Konsa, a key pillar of this Villa team, returned alongside Tyrone Mings and Matty Cash replaced Andrés García.

However, the introduction of Marcus Rashford at halftime proved pivotal. Rashford’s presence sparked Villa into life, and he played a crucial role in both goals. His cross allowed Marco Asensio to score the equalizer, and his assist enabled Asensio to grab the winner.

Chelsea had opportunities to regain the lead, but Cole Palmer squandered a one-on-one chance with Emiliano Martínez. The visitors were left to rue their missed chances, including a late error by goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen that gifted Villa the winner.

Jörgensen made a mess of a routine save, inadvertently giving Villa the leg-up they had been looking for. Asensio’s side-foot volley from Rashford’s cross after a short corner slipped through Jörgensen’s gloves, giving Villa the lead.

This victory could be a major turnaround for Villa, who had been struggling to find their footing in the Premier League. Emery’s tactical adjustments and Rashford’s impact off the bench proved decisive in securing the maximum three points.

As Villa once again look to build momentum, they will need to address their lack of cutting edge and find consistency in their performances. The win over Chelsea sure provides some positive boost, but Emery’s side still has work to do to achieve a European spot finish this season.
