Nigeria Super Eagles attacker, Ademola Lookman stole the headlines yet again after scoring a late winner three minutes from time to catapult Atalanta to the top of the Serie A log.
Piero Gasperini’s side came into the clash sitting second and a point adrift of table toppers, Napoli. Knowing a win against Milan would keep them in touching distance of Conte’s men who plays host to Lazio on Sunday.
It was Atalanta who drew the first blood as early as the 12th minute through Charles De Ketelaere, as the ex-Rossoneri forward rose high above Theo Hernández to head in Marten De Roon’s lofted free-kick.
Atalanta got pegged back 10 minutes later when Rafael Leão whipped in a perfect cross from the left flank, allowing Álvaro Morata to slide in to restore parity.
Christian Pulisic was forced off injured before the break, to further weaken Milan’s attacking threat heading into the second half as both sides pushed to seize control in an increasingly end-to-end contest following the restart. Milan carved out the first chance through Tijjani Reijnders, while Atalanta equally squandered several chances of their own.
Lookman forced Maignan into a brilliant save after picking up Lazar Samardžić’s pass 10 minutes from time, but the Nigerian forward wasn’t to be denied again three minutes from time as he headed home at the far post to seal victory for the La Dea, who have now won nine successive matches across all competitions and for Lookman, it is now 8 goals, 4 assists in 15 league games this season.
