In a groundbreaking move bringing together Brazilian panache and Portuguese football tradition, Real Madrid superstar Vinícius Júnior has spearheaded a consortium of Brazilian and Spanish investors in the acquisition of a majority share in FC Alverca, a historic club competing in Portugal’s Liga Portugal 2.

The deal, agreed on this morning, has the consortium borrow 70-80% of FC Alverca from previous owner Ricardo Vicintin. Although no money values are mentioned, the investment is a strategic goal to advance the club onto a higher pedestal in Portuguese football.

Vinícius Júnior’s acquisition of club ownership is one of a series of trends among the world’s top footballers to extend their influence from the pitch to the boardroom. It follows Real Madrid teammate Kylian Mbappé’s acquisition of French club SM Caen in September 2024.

FC Alverca, established in 1939, has five years of top-flight Portuguese experience. Though it experienced financial difficulties that led to its provisional dissolution in 2005, the club showed its stability by reforming in 2006 and gaining promotion to Liga Portugal 2 for the 2023–24 season. FC Alverca is second in the league and therefore the best-placed candidate to gain promotion to the Primeira Liga.

The traditional Brazilian football relationships of the club are evidenced, as 15 of Brazil’s legends already figure in its roster. These relationships will be further consolidated by this take-over, as the two-way transfer of talent and expertise between Portugal and Brazil is possible.

Interim Chief Executive Matheus Ornelas will be in charge of club operations for the remainder of the season to ensure continuity while the new ownership group transitions its strategic priorities. Detailed proposals on infrastructural spend, youth development programs, and outreach programs will be made available within weeks.

Vinícius Júnior talked about his expectation of being part of this new era, “FC Alverca is a club with a lot of history and immense potential. Our team is devoted to its history and constructing the club towards newer heights. We are devoted to constructing players, developing infrastructures, and engaging with society in general at a very deep level in an effort to construct a sustainable and successful future.”

This acquisition is not only an investment in European football strategy but also the increasing trend of professional players taking part directly in club management and development. The vision for the consortium of FC Alverca is competitive victory, as well as reinforcing the cultural bond between football heritage in Brazil and Portugal.
