FC Barcelona is pleased to announce that Pau Cubarsí, the club’s young central defender, has signed a contract extension that will see him stay with the club until June 30, 2029. The agreement demonstrates the club’s commitment to nurturing and retaining local talent from La Masia.
The contract signing ceremony took place today at midday, with Cubarsí signing his new contract in the presence of FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta, First Vice-President Rafa Yuste, and the club’s Director of Football, Anderson Luis de Souza, popularly referred to as “Deco.”
The journey of Cubarsí with FC Barcelona began in 2018 when he moved from Girona as an alevín (U12) player. His rapid rise up the ranks finally resulted in his debut in the first team on January 18, 2024, during a Copa del Rey encounter with Unionistas de Salamanca. Since then, he has appeared 60 times in the first team, 52 times as a starting player, aged 18.
In this period, Cubarsí has been a pillar at defense, taking the field for 88% of the time in 36 games, covering La Liga, UEFA Champions League, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de España. Together with Iñigo Martínez, his pairing has been excellent, leaving an indelible mark on the consistency of the defensive wall of the team.
Clearly from his phenomenal game reading and ability to deliver line-breaking passes, Cubarsí embodies the type of virtues FC Barcelona holds dear. His love and commitment to the club have not gone unnoticed. FC Barcelona Head Coach Hansi Flick said, “He fights for the badge, he loves this club and never gives up. He represents our values.”
Cubarsí himself expressed his happiness, saying, “Very happy to renew with the club of my life, the club that has given me everything. It is a pride to be linked for a few more years.” Cubarsí’s great performances have also been rewarded with being chosen for the Spanish national team. He has already earned five caps for the senior team and played a key role in Spain’s Olympic team winning the gold medal at the Paris Games last summer.
This contract extension is only one aspect of FC Barcelona’s grand scheme to lock up the futures of its young talents. Following recent extensions of players like Ronald Araujo, Pedri, Gavi, and Gerard Martín, the club is setting itself up for long-term success.
As FC Barcelona continues to deal with the realities of modern football, the commitment to developing and retaining local players like Pau Cubarsí is central to the ideology of the club. With this extension, the club and the player are destined to achieve great things together in the future.
