Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy has been voted UEFA Player of the Week after his scintillating performance in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League playoffs. Guirassy’s scintillating performance aided Dortmund to a 3-0 thrashing of Sporting CP.
In the Lisbon game, Guirassy scored the opener with a header to begin Dortmund’s domination. Besides scoring the goal, he was a jack-of-all-trades as he also laid an assist for fellow player Pascal Groß’s goal that sealed Dortmund’s domination further.
The new benchmark brings Guirassy’s Champions League goal tally this term to 10, as many as the top scorer in the competition. He has finally surpassed former Dortmund strikers Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland, both of whom had previously set 10 goals in a season.
Head Coach Niko Kovac admired the work ethic of Guirassy, stating, “He was everywhere. This could give us a push for the coming weeks.” Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl also had his say, “He plays a crucial role in our game, not only as a goal-scorer but also as a link-up player and ball-winner.”
UEFA Player of the Week is determined by a fan vote, and it reflects increasing popularity for Guirassy among football fans across the globe. He finished first, with Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior finishing as second runner-up, Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis as third runner-up, and Feyenoord’s Igor Paixão placing fourth.
Consistency of form of Guirassy has sparked Dortmund’s European campaign. His direction on the field and being able to dictate the pace of the match have been of immense value to the team.
The second leg next week at home against Sporting CP is the team’s expectation of qualifying for the Round of 16. Guirassy’s current form will be important in their attempt to make the most out of their advantage gained in the first leg.
