In what can be regarded as a very surprising twist in the wheel of football transfer dealings, respected sports journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that the highly anticipated transfer of Nigerian striker Victor Boniface from German club Bayer Leverkusen to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr is now called off.
Victor Boniface, 24, has been an important mainstay for Bayer Leverkusen since he joined the club in 2023. His fine form this season, with eight goals in 15 outings, had seen him gain interest from several clubs, notably Al Nassr. Negotiations between Bayer Leverkusen and Al Nassr had reached the final stages, with a transfer fee reportedly in the region of €60 million. Boniface had even done a medical, which all but signaled the near-finalization of the deal.
However, after Bayer Leverkusen defeated Sparta Prague 2-0, head coach Xabi Alonso confirmed that Boniface would remain with the German champions. Alonso said that Boniface would return to training on Thursday and is expected to be available for the next Bundesliga game against Hoffenheim on Sunday. He admitted that the player had ambitions but declared Boniface was committed to the team.
The collapse of Boniface’s transfer to Al Nassr comes as the Saudi club are chasing other striking options. It is now reported that Al Nassr are focusing their attention on Aston Villa’s Jhon Durán, with negotiations agreed and contract signed. Durán has enjoyed a remarkable start to the current Premier League season and has been on the radar of several top-flight clubs.
Victor Boniface decided to stay with Bayer Leverkusen, which will definitely raise the attacking power of the team that is still competing in both domestic and European competitions. Everyone will be waiting to see how this development is going to affect Leverkusen for the rest of the season.
