Chelsea Football Club is thrilled to announce the signing of U.S. Women’s National Team defender Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave FC for a world-record transfer fee of approximately £900,000 ($1.1 million). This landmark deal makes Girma the first female footballer to command a transfer fee exceeding $1 million.
Girma, 24, has established herself as one of the premier defenders globally. She was the first overall pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft by San Diego Wave FC and quickly garnered accolades, including NWSL Defender of the Year and Rookie of the Year in her debut season. She repeated as Defender of the Year in 2023, underscoring her consistent excellence.
On the international stage, Girma has earned 44 caps with the U.S. Women’s National Team since her debut in April 2022. She played a pivotal role in securing the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, participating in every minute of the tournament. Her outstanding performances led to her being named U.S. Soccer’s Female Player of the Year in 2023.
Chelsea FC Women’s manager, Sonia Bompastor, expressed her enthusiasm about the acquisition:
“Naomi is an exceptional talent whose defensive prowess and leadership qualities will be invaluable to our squad. Her arrival aligns with our ambition to compete at the highest levels domestically and in Europe.”
Girma’s signing comes at a crucial time, as the team addresses the absence of center-back Kadeisha Buchanan due to an ACL injury. Her addition is expected to bolster Chelsea’s defense as they continue their campaign in the Women’s Super League and the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Naomi Girma shared her excitement about joining Chelsea:
“I’m honored to join a club with such a rich history and winning mentality. I look forward to contributing to the team’s success and competing at the highest level in Europe.”
This transfer not only strengthens Chelsea’s squad but also signifies a monumental moment in women’s football, reflecting the sport’s growth and the increasing investment in top-tier talent.
Chelsea FC Women will introduce Girma to fans at Stamford Bridge ahead of their upcoming match against Arsenal, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the club and its supporters.
