The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has recently appointed Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior national football team. Born on November 11, 1977, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Chelle brings a wealth of experience as both a former player and a manager.

Early Life and Playing Career

Chelle was born to a French father and a Malian mother, giving him dual nationality. He began his professional playing career in France, where he represented several clubs including FC Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais. As a centre-back, he was known for his defensive prowess and leadership on the field. Throughout his playing career, he made five appearances for the Mali national team between 2003 and 2006.

Transition to Coaching

After retiring from professional football, Chelle transitioned into coaching. He began his managerial career with GS Consolat in 2016, where he achieved a win percentage of over 53% during his tenure. Following successful spells at FC Martigues and US Boulogne, he took the reins of the Mali national team in May 2022.

Under his guidance, Mali secured an impressive record of 14 wins in 22 matches before his dismissal in June 2024 following a disappointing performance in World Cup qualifiers.

Coaching Philosophy and Style

Chelle is recognized for his attacking style of play, often utilizing a 4-4-2 formation that emphasizes wing play and two-striker systems. He believes that “attack is the best form of defense,” which has led to successful outcomes during his coaching stints. His teams have maintained solid defensive records while showcasing free-flowing football.

Appointment as Head Coach of Super Eagles

Chelle’s appointment as head coach of the Super Eagles comes at a critical time as Nigeria prepares for upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The NFF aims for immediate results under Chelle’s leadership, emphasizing a results-oriented approach in his contract. His previous experience with Mali positions him well to navigate the challenges ahead.

“I am honored to take on this role with such a prestigious team,” said Chelle upon his appointment. “I look forward to working with the players and staff to bring success back to Nigeria.”
