The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team. This announcement comes after a thorough selection process and follows the departure of former coach José Peseiro.
Chelle, a Malian national and experienced football tactician, has a commendable background in coaching, having led Mali’s national team to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. His appointment was endorsed by the NFF Executive Committee after a recommendation from its Technical and Development Sub-Committee during a meeting held on January 2, 2025.
With a playing career that includes five caps for Mali, Chelle has also managed several clubs, including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, and MC Oran. His extensive experience in both coaching and playing positions him well to lead the Super Eagles as they prepare for crucial upcoming matches.
Chelle’s immediate challenge will be to guide Nigeria through the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The Super Eagles currently sit fifth in Group C and must secure victories in their remaining matches to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
“I am excited about this opportunity and ready to take on the challenge of leading such a talented team,” Chelle stated. “Together, we will strive for success and aim to restore the Super Eagles’ status on the global stage.”
