Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 win over Ipswich at the Emirates Stadium, moving up to second in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Liverpool. Kai Havertz’s first-half goal proved decisive, as the Gunners struggled to capitalize on their dominance.
Havertz turned home Leandro Trossard’s cross from close range in the 23rd minute, scoring his seventh Premier League goal of the campaign. However, Arsenal, without the injured Bukayo Saka, were unable to extend their lead, spurning several second-half chances.
Gabriel Magalhaes missed Arsenal’s best opportunity, heading a Declan Rice corner wide from a few yards out. Martin Odegaard and substitute Mikel Merino were also denied by Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.
At the other end, Arsenal’s defense was solid, conceding only three shots, none of which troubled David Raya. However, Mikel Arteta will be concerned about his team’s lack of cutting edge, particularly with upcoming trips to Brentford and Brighton.
The win sends Arsenal above Chelsea, who lost to Fulham on Boxing Day, and keeps them six points behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand. Ipswich remains 19th but earned praise from their traveling fans for their efforts.
In Saka’s absence, Gabriel Martinelli was deployed on the right wing but struggled to make an impact. The goal came from the opposite side, with Trossard’s cross finding Havertz in the six-yard box.
Arsenal directed 49% of their attacks down the right flank, with Martinelli, Odegaard, and Gabriel Jesus all popping up on that side. However, despite their movement causing problems for Ipswich, Arsenal generally struggled to create openings.
In the end, Havertz’s goal proved enough to secure the win and keep Arsenal in touch with Liverpool at the top of the table. However, with Saka set to miss over two months, Arteta’s team faces a challenging period ahead.
